Arrhythmias associated with acute respiratory failure in patients with chronic airway obstruction.

چکیده
Electrocardiograms of 70 patients with chronic airway obstruction were examined from 148 consecutive admissions for acute respiratory failure. Forty-seven percent of the patients had major sopraventricular or ventricular arrhythmias. These arrhythmias were documented on 36 percent of bospital mbidwns. Supraventricular arrhythmias were slihtiy more common than ventricular arrhythmias, the most frequent b e i i atrial tachycardia and mnltifocal atrial tachycardia. Supraventricular arrhythmias tended to recur. Ventriclllar arrhythmias were often preceded by premature ventricular contractions, supraventicular arrhythmb, or other ventricular arrhythmiss. Ventricular arrhythmias were associated with a poor prognosis; 70 percent of patients with ventricular arrhythmia died doring the hospital admission and none survived to the end of the study period. Tbese data suggest that continuous electrocardiographic monitoring of chronic airway obstruction patients with acute respiratory failure wonM be of value in predicting prognosis and identifying patients Wrely to develop serious arrhythmias; these findings may have therapeutic implications.

Overlap Syndrome in Respiratory Medicine: Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are highly prevalent chronic diseases in the general population. Both are characterized by similar mechanisms: airway inflammation, airway obstruction, and airway hyperresponsiveness. However, the distinction between the two obstructive diseases is not always clear. Multiple epidemiological studies demonstrate that in elderly people with o...

adequately ventilate), or both hypoxic and hypercapnic. In addition, respiratory failure can be caused by an inability to protect the airway. Alterations in the normal physiology and anatomy of the respiratory system can lead to respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. Anatomic alterations causing airway obstruction, such as tumors, edema, direct or indirect trauma, burns, or other...

Supraventricular and ventricular dysrhythmias, as well as conduction disturbances of varying severity are frequently observed in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The type of arrhythmia that occurs in patients with COPD is influenced by their clinical state. Co-existing coronary heart disease, severe blood gas abnormalities and medication may precipitate the rhythm disturbances. Par...

BACKGROUND Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is being increasingly used in children with acute respiratory failure, preventing complications associated with conventional mecánical ventilation. AIMS To determinate the efficacy of NIV in children with acute respiratory failure or chronic respiratory failure. METHODS Prospective study of all patients who underwent NIV (November 2005 to April 2008...
متن کاملMultinodular Goiter Spontaneous Hemorrhage in ESRD Patients Result in Acute Respiratory Failure
Euthyroid multinodular goiters may lead to acute respiratory failure caused by airway obstruction or laryngotracheal compression. Here, we present a case admitted to the nephrologist with multinodular goiter spontaneous hemorrhage along with respiratory failure and end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which required urgent surgical intervention. We report the case of a 63-year-old woman with ESRD who...
